The Cunning Work of Frost

Original painting by Spiros Gelekas.

Inspired by a phrase from The Silmarillion’s Ainulindalë, The Cunning Work of Frost reflects the moment in which Eru Ilúvatar reveals to Ulmo that even the bitter cold introduced by Melkor could not escape creation’s deeper harmony - giving birth instead to the beauty of frost, snow, and ice.

Rather than illustrating a direct narrative scene, the painting approaches the idea symbolically through fractured textures, elemental motion, and an overwhelming frozen atmosphere.

A solitary figure stands against the immensity of the storm while light and ice spread across the landscape almost like veins, roots, or remnants of a shattered song.

The work explores one of Tolkien’s most profound recurring themes: that discord itself may ultimately become part of creation’s greater beauty.

Balancing destruction and stillness simultaneously, the painting exists between abstraction and mythology - an atmospheric meditation on transformation, endurance, and the hidden elegance born from ruin.

Acrylic on canvas board, 30x40cm.
